Hitachi and Fujitsu share a plasma manufacturing plant in Japan, so it’s no surprise to find a few similarities between their respective products. Like the Fujitsu P42HTA51, Hitachi’s latest 42-incher is based around
a 1024 x 1024-pixel ALiS plasma screen. And, like the Fujitsu screen, the 42PD7200 looks its best when it’s displaying a 1080i high-def image. With a 720p signal, we noticed a slight increase in video noise, presumably due to the additional image processing required to display a 720-line progressive signal on a 1024- line interlaced screen. The chaps at Fujitsu are old hands at the plasma game – so much so that many other manufacturers have traditionally built their plasma TVs around Fujitsu technology. As such, you’d expect the company to produce some very high-quality plasma products of their own. And, as it happens, you’d be right. (more...)

Like Acer, Viewsonic is a name that people will associate with computer components rather than household entertainment devices. And, like the Acer AT3201W, the Viewsonic N3260W betrays its desktop roots in several ways. (more...)

While many of the sets on test struggled to produce a decent picture on standard TV, the Toshiba 32WLT58 managed to address many of the usual blockiness and colour issues experienced when watching broadcast telly programmes on an LCD set. Generally speaking, the image was quite soft, but the picture actually tends to benefit from this. (more...)

When you switch on the Sony Bravia KDL-V32A12U – or, indeed, any of the sets in this test – for the first time, you’re likely to get quite a shock. This is because, for reasons best known to themselves, manufacturers
tend to ship LCD TVs with their picture settings set in what they call ‘Dynamic’ or ‘Vivid’ mode, which usually means garishly vibrant colours and extreme brightness and contrast. This is also why you shouldn’t judge the picture of a TV in a shop. (more...)

As we’ve said elsewhere, looks are largely a matter of taste. However, the Sharp Aquos LC- 32GD7E has an imposing appearance, which is perhaps something to do with its stark silver colour, straight edges and the extra height from a larger-than-average speaker underneath the screen. (more...)
